Extension cords are used to connect electricity to whatever you need. In the case of outdoor extension cords, there are a ton of different things that get connected, from outdoor appliances, to decorations, to lighting fixtures. But that’s not all. Outdoor extension cords power your outdoor games, power tools, and music setups. If you like backyard parties, luaus, cookouts, or group sports games, you’ve likely used an electrical cord in the back yard. Anyone who uses their backyard often uses an extension cord. The problem is, they can be tricky to conceal – and nobody wants a big, black wire running through their yard. While it isn’t an easy task, we’ve identified three great ways to hide backyard extension cords and we’ll highlight them here.
Ways to Hide Outdoor Extension Cords
Hide Your Extension Cord with a Conduit
What You’ll Need:
Fish Tape Puller
We have two different methods for hiding your cords with a conduit. The first method is simple, but we’ll walk you through both ways. For both of these methods you’re going to run your cords around the siding, garden borders, fences and outside walls of your home. The first way is with a metal fish tape puller and the second way is with a vacuum cleaner, pulling wire, and conduit piston.
Metal Fish Tape Puller
What You’ll Do:
Feed the fish tape into the conduit. Wrap your wiring through the fish tape and pull through. Hang wherever you want.
Using the Vacuum, Conduit Piston, and Pulling Wire
What You’ll Do:
Using a conduit piston makes this process a bit more complicated but still not difficult. It should also be noted that this method will take more money. That said, it’s a good long-term investment because using a conduit hides the cords from harsh outside weather. To do it, first take your conduit piston and tie it to the pulling wire. Pull through and insert into the end of the conduit. Set your vacuum up on the other end of the conduit and then turn the vacuum on. After you suck the piston through to the other side of the conduit, you can remove it.
Hide Your Cords with Plants and Grass
What You’ll Do:
Camouflage your cords with plants and grass! It’s natural, it’s beautiful, it’s fun. Here’s how. Firstly, you could use a conduit. If you don’t want to do that, lay the cords out directly onto your walking path. Hide the cord naturally using plants, stones, patches of grass, lawn gnomes, or other lawn decorations. This method is the double whammy. You’re hiding your cords while at the same time spiffing up your yard to look organized and clean. To cut down on tripping hazards, try a cable ramp. Simply fix the ramp to the ground and run your cable through. A cable ramp is also great because it gives the cable a more streamlined, neat look.
Run Your Cords Underground
Our last and final method is to hide the cords underneath the ground. Installing your wires underground is a great way to hide them. It’s a great long-term solution that maximizes the life of your cable cords and makes them waterproof. You can use a PVC-ribbed tube to cover your extension cords, prolonging their lifespan even further.
What You’ll Do:
- Make your outlet fit for all weather by putting it into a waterproof box
- Dig a channel for your cords, making sure there is enough room to reach the installation location and outdoor outlet
- Clean up
- Test your work
