Power cords get tangled and jumbled up pretty easily. So do extension cords. You don’t want your wiring to become a hazard. That’s why we’ve come up with four awesome ways for you to organize and store your cords and wires.
4 Ways to Hide Extension Cords and Power Cords
#1 Label Them
Labeling anything is a good idea. Why? It makes your stuff easier to sort through and gives you a better grasp on what you have. Labeling power cords and/or extension cords is easy. Simply bundle your cords with stretchable bands. Customize with any sort of text. For example, you can outright label the object, “cable cord” or “computer cord.” You could also get creative and give your cords actual names. To get really organized, include the length and usage of the cord on its label.
#2 Roll ‘Em Up
Take an old or unused paper towel holder and feed looped cords through there. Unravel the cords as needed, just as you would a paper towel. By keeping your cords rolled up you’re cutting down on clutter AND you’re cutting down on any possible hazards. You can stash power strips and connectors nearby for easy use. Another way to roll up power cords is to roll them into a circle and bind them at the top with a zip tie or rubber band. You can even secure the cords with hook-and-loop-tape. This will keep cords tidy. Plus, because they’re loose, you can bring them anywhere or hide them anywhere. Again, for added organization, label them. Use a paint pen to write the type and length of the cord. You can also label with paper key tags or string tags. Hang the rolled up cords on wall hooks for even more organization.
#3 Hide ‘Em in a Bucket
A great way to store (and transport) your extension cords is to roll them up inside a big bucket. This makes the cord not only easy to find, but also easy to transport. You can do this with a five-gallon bucket by cutting the bucket an inch from the bottom and feeding the cord through. The cord should spool out smoothly. When you’re done, simply coil the cord back into the bucket.
What NOT to DO
While we’ve mentioned some great ways to organize your cords, safety is really important and, so, we thought we’d take a second to mention it. You can prevent fire and household injuries by taking on the following tips from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. So, before we get into the BEST and LAST way to organize, here are some things you shouldn’t do with cords:
- Don’t overload your cords. Too many cords can mean big problems. Check out the wattage rating on your extension cords to get an idea of how much power they can handle. Never plug items in that go over the MAX wattage amount.
- Keep your cords loose AND tidy. Never allow cords to jumble. If your cords are coiled, looped, or covered, this could be bad. For an added layer of safety, use angled extensions cords in areas where your at-home furniture is pushing against the electrical plug.
- Don’t be afraid to throw cords away. When cords are getting old and unusable, don’t be afraid to toss them in the trash. When plastic casing starts to look cracked or cruddy, it’s time to say goodbye to it. Also, if your wiring is feeling soft or hot as you’re using it, throw it in the garbage ASAP. By getting rid of unusable wires you’re helping prevent in-home injury or fire.
