Electrical cords are ugly and annoying. We need them to power our appliances, like the lamps that light up our spaces, and the televisions we gather around at night to watch with our families, but cords sure do look sloppy on our carpets and floors – plus, they take up a bunch of space. The worst is when electrical wires run through the middle of a room – talk about an unsightly scene. It’s not only an eye sore, it’s also dangerous. There are several methods for covering these cords, but only some of them are actually safe and recommended by electricians. In this article we’ll talk about one way you should NEVER hide your electrical cables and 3 Creative Ways You SHOULD hide them.
The #1 Way NOT to Hide Cables
There are several methods for hiding electric cables (and we’ll talk about three of them below) but hiding them under your rugs or carpets is never a good idea. Hiding them under carpeting can generate a large amount of heat and cause a fire. That’s why we say this is the #1 way NOT to hide cables
Methods for Hiding Electrical Cords in the Middle of the Room
Now, moving onto the ways that you CAN hide electrical cords in the middle of the room. We have 3 different methods for you. Here they are:
1. Use Your Furniture
For this method you’ll optimize your furniture to hide the cables. Buy some cord clips (make sure they work with the material of furniture you have). Most clips are ok with plastic, wood, glass, and other materials. Attach the clips to your furniture, then gather your cables and secure them with the clips. Talk about getting double the use out of your sofa!
2. Cover the Cords
Use wire covers to conceal the cords. This method is great for hardwood floors, concrete walls, and everything in between. Hiding electrical cords is easy with this method. Simply purchase a cord cover. They are created to hide wires in different places, including the living room. Take off the adhesive backing and attach the cord covers where they need to go. Take a look at the length and thickness of the cord cover to make sure it will fit your cords properly. Some manufacturers created their wire covers with screws and anchors rather than adhesives. Whatever product you use, just make sure you have the correct tools to make it happen, like a screw, hammer, etc.
3. Run the Cord Along the Leg of a Table
This method looks professional and chic – and that’s because it is the preferred way professional stage setters and interior designers hide excess cords. To do this, use a cord clip or whatever cord management kit you prefer. Just make sure it’s safe with the material of the table and fire safe. Attach several cord clips to the side of the table and the leg. Add as many clips as needed. Make sure there is a sufficient amount to hold the cable in place properly. This method can also be done without the clips. Simply wrap the cables around the legs of the table. What you’ll end up with is a tangle-free, mess-free, and chic area. Literally no fuss at all!
4. Make a DIY Project
There are several DIY projects you can follow along with to hide power strips and electronic cords in a creative way. One interesting DIY incorporates old, hollowed-out books or VHS cases. Here is how to make it happen:
Get a pile of old hardcover books or VHS cases. The books or cases should be equal to the width of your electronic devices and cables. First, you’re going to cut all of the pages out of the books using sharp scissors or a knife. Be careful and be sure to use caution when doing this. If you’re using VHS cases, take the old VHS out and put it to the side. Next, attach the pile of books cover to cover using glue.
At the end of the project you’ll have a stack of books and it will look like a stack of books. If you’re using the VHS cases, also glue them together cover to cover. When the project is finished you can stuff electronics and cords into the books. This project is especially good for organizing routers, speakers, remotes, and the cables that go along with the TV. Everything will look neater and out of sight once it’s organized in the book stack. While this method isn’t exclusive to hiding wires, it can be used to hide electronics AND some wires as well, so we think it was a great mention for this list!
In Conclusion
Hiding electrical cords is the best way to keep the middle of your room neat, elegant, and safe. When you hide your electrical cords, you prevent serious issues like fire hazards and the possibility of electrocution. These issues are especially scary when there are children or pets in the home.
